Robert D. Baker, Sr., age 74, of Park Avenue, Salem, OH passed away peacefully with his family surrounding him at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at his home after a year-long battle with Leukemia. He was born on Jan. 19, 1933 in Lisbon, OH to Camilla G. (Cusick) and Fherman G. Baker. Mr. Baker graduated from Salem High School in 1949 and Tri-State Engineering College in 1955. Bob married Kathie (Hack) April 8, 1982. Bob was employed by Ohio Edison, Economy Electric, Braunlich-Roessle and most recently owned Technical Services, Electric Consulting Firm. He was a social member of the Salem Eagles, the Italian American Club, VFW Post #592, Salem AMVETS and was an avid senior men’s baseball team member. He also taught spinning at the Salem YWCA for the past nine years. Mr. Baker was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and session member as well as Sunday School teacher. He was an avid fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and American Heart Association. Bob was a former member and past president of the Lions and Jaycee Clubs of Warren, OH. Surviving along with his wife, Kathie, are two sons, Randy (Sue) Baker of North Augusta, SC and Robert Baker, Jr. (Kimberly Masters) of Columbus, OH; four daughters, Cindy (Larry) Adkins, of Spring Hill, FL, Michelle (Eric) Kunar of Powell, OH, Melissa (Brion) Roman of Villa Hills, KY and Marcie Baker of Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Baker is also survived by his stepmother, June Baker of Massillon, OH and five siblings, Fred Baker of Salem, OH, John (Gloria) Baker of Sarasota, FL, Verna (Harry) Krebs of Lake Placid, FL, and Doris (Steve) Myers of Gastonia, NC; 11 grandchildren, Matt, Katy and Alex Baker; Seth and Luke Adkins; Jake and Mollie Kunar; and Caleb, Cody, Shelby and Emily Roman. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, Camilla G. (Cusick) and Fherman Baker and a brother, Fherman Baker, Jr. Bob requested that his body be donated to science. It has been sent to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for the advancement of medical sciences. Burial will be at a later time. Celebration of a wonderful and joyous life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 436 East Second St., Salem, OH on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 a.m. with family receiving friends one hour before. Rev. Meta Cramer will be officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests tributes be made to Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Northern Ohio Chapter, 902 Westpoint Parkway, Suite 300, Cleveland, OH 44145 or the First Presbyterian Church, 436 East 2nd Street, Salem, OH 44460.
